Put A Record On: Bandcamp Friday Edition
Taking down the paywall this week to just share a bunch of new, great music that you can buy — it's Bandcamp Friday, which means that every cent you spend goes directly to the artists (instead of Bandcamp taking a cut). Marissa did a Bandcamp-centric post a couple months ago if you're looking for more inspiration!
Hope Is The Thing With Feathers, Rhiannon Giddens: Feels a bit like recommending a Rhiannon album at this point is a little redundant — we all already know everything she does is wonderful, performed with care and virtuosity. This is no exception. — NW
Reunion, Mama's Broke: Moody, acoustic folk perfect for a cozy, rainy day (which we are finally having in Dallas after MONTHS as we speak!). A lot of credit to Ben Salmon's great round-ups of country records for Bandcamp as we go through these records, also!
Landfill Poetry, Riley Downing: Longtime DRTI readers may remember Downing's origin story: Before he was a member of the Deslondes and fulltime music maker, he almost became a garbage man. Spoiler, he didn't; as a result, we get that many more sweet country grooves and plain-spoken, deep-voiced stories. — NW
My Second Rodeo, Todd Snider: The first posthumous single from Todd Snider is so smart and laidback and fun — just a talent gone way, way, way too soon. Read Marissa on him here. — NW
Sittin' With Blaze: A Tribute to Blaze Foley: Do you want to just weep? Well, a star-studded Blaze Foley tribute album might just be the best prompt for that. Two different versions of "If I Could Only Fly," one by Lucinda Williams (!)? John Moreland and Lydia Loveless pulling out all the stops on "Faded Loves & Memories"? Can we get a duet album of these two? Again, we've got moody, cozy fall vibes on lock here. — NW
American Rough, Andrew Sa: I'm a sucker for country/folk/etc that imagines a sonic world outside the lines, and Sa really nails that here (along with other lovely transgressions). — NW
All My Faith, Maya De Vitry: De Vitry may just have delivered the ultimate Nashville/bachelorette song with "Bachelorette Lessons" — warm, smart, sweet. — NW
Wasting My Whole Life Away, Hard Drive: Became a Tatiana Hargreaves convert at Big Ears, would die for her etc. Great pun, great, hard drivin' bluegrass. — NW
"Volver A Celaya"/"City of Immigrants," Steve Earle ft. Los Lobos and Forro In The Dark, respectively: Treasuring Steve Earle while we've got him, a guy who's been about that life (inclusivity, openness, progressive thinking and music making) for a really long time. — NW
Bittersweet, Kimmi Bitter: Still sore over Breaking Bad beating out Mad Men in that TV poll? (I think our readers are wise enough to know Reservation Dogs was the real snub...) Well Bitter's sweet, retro California surf-country is probably for you — it's slick and polished in all the right ways. — NW
"We're America Too," Squeakie ft. Mya Byrne: How has this anthem become even more relevant and important over the past year? Easiest $1.50 you'll spend today. — NW
Single-Footing Horse, Jake Blount: Expertly rendered old-time music, tradition that still sounds fresh in keeping with Blount's overall project. — NW
Porchlight, Two Runner: What don't we love from Gar Hole? The swampy South's favorite label delivers another banger with this grassy collection of jams. — NW
Los Ojos Del Cóndor, Hermanos Gutiérrez: Country, perhaps not — but Western, for sure. This is all the sweeping, open spaces music Ennio Morricone was dreaming of. — NW
"Hell Or High Water," Miko Marks: As is always the case with Marks, the vocals are just extraordinary here. Classic, bright blues. — NW
Allison de Groot & Rich Ruth, Allison de Groot & Rich Ruth: A little arty, minimalist banjo music? Don't mind if I do. (Thanks to Viking's Choice for the rec.) — NW
