The Good
“Called Crazy,” Kassi Ashton: I’ve been on the Kassi Ashton train for a while now, and have been enraged that she hasn’t had her breakthrough moment (tale as old as time, of course). She’s a dynamite performer, a hell of a singer and a writer with a lot of lyrical style. Plus she makes her wardrobe by hand? I love that this one flips the usual “crazy woman” trope on its head: it’s not me, it’s you. - MM
“2AM in London,” Morgan Wade: Can I tell you that I am a little mad about Morgan Wade? Not mad AT her, but mad about her, because the tabloid obsession over whatever woman she is friends with (housewives something something? I don’t watch it) really sucked the air out of the room around her last record. Anyway, here’s hoping we are able to place the focus back where it matters when it comes to Morgan: her music. This is a devastating little acoustic song about being overseas and lonely, with her cutting drawl at the forefront. - MM
“The Echo,” Kyshona: Written with one of my favorites, the ever-talented Caroline Spence, this isn’t exactly country, but it is an absolutely fierce bit of soulful rock and roll about the importance of keeping her familial stories, and sacrifice, alive. - MM
