The Good
“Take My Heart,” Florry: Grungey indie country with real warmth — good timin’ music that’s a little rough around the edges. Also, who could resist an album called The Holey Bible? — NW
“Underestimate Me,” Maggie Rose: For years now, Maggie Rose has been one of those downright vocal gems and all-around talents that Nashville loves to say they don’t quite know what to do with - the classic retort to a woman being a little bit too creative, too out of the box the industry designed to keep them in. Good on Big Loud for signing Maggie as she is: a soulful, bluesy powerhouse that can spin up a a perfect. empowering/fuck you combo. - MM
“Fucking Fool,” Liliana Hudgens: For fans of Erin Rae ( a.k.a. me and many other smart people) — pretty, pretty singing. — NW
Cover Girl, Aaron Watson: On one hand, it would be nice if men would just stop being weird about women and put them on records, normal style. On the other, props to Texas fav Aaron Watson for making this album that puts on display not only some classic songs by women but peers like Jamie Lin Wilson and Bri Bagwell. Plus, this cover of “Million Reasons” proves, once again, that Joanne was a country album. - MM
