The Good
Restless, Palmyra: File under “not a country record but if you are here, and you trust us, you will like this, because if you read this newsletter you care about how something sounds, not what genre it’s in.” This album is folkie enough to appease the country bone (and believe me, mine needs to be appeased), but blends in indie rock textures in this way that feels so fresh and urgent. Reminds me of Nashville in 2011, Dr. Dog, I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, and other things that make me happy, but in their own POV. Feel like this could be my record of the spring? It’s all I’ve listened to since I first put it on. A soundtrack for getting through all the shit ahead. - MM
“My Time is Gonna Come,” Jesse Daniel: A touch of Rodney Crowell, a touch of 70s rock, that kind of chorus that keeps you wading through life one foot in front of another...just what the doctor ordered. - MM
“Waxahatchie,” Pug Johnson: If I’m gonna have another Waxahatchee/Waxahatchie song or artist, it better be good. Well, this one is! Vibrant storytelling with out the over-serious self-importance and a good dose of twangy boogie. - MM
