The Good
“White Lies, White Jesus and You,” Katie Pruitt: With every new song released, I’m more and more blown away by the stellar writing skills of Katie Pruitt, and the way she makes these gut-punch, melodic rock-folk moments turn into true roadmaps through the tumultuous road of humanity, especially for folks who aren’t cis, straight white men. I can’t speak to what it must feel like to grow up in the church and have a religious doctrine tell you that what’s in your heart is somehow wrong, though I’ve seen it and experienced it around me, happening to ones I’ve cared for - but I do know that I always thought Jesus was supposed to be about unconditional love, and it seems a lot of folks are confused about what exactly that means. We all want to find a way of faith or being or spirituality to call our own, and there’s no better soundtrack than these songs. - MM
“Boombox,” Charlie Parr: A rousing, rollicking, rough-around-the edges tune about dancing — what’s not to love? — NW
“Sounds Like the Radio,” Zach Top: It’s not that I don’t like this!! I do! I think it’s awesome that a song this traditional, with such a honky-tonk vibe, is doing so well at radio. I’m into it, and him. I just think it’s a wee bit funny that the authenticity police seem to be liking him because he “looks the part” (I.e. western masc) as opposed to Midland who gave us “Mr. Lonely”….hmmmmmm. That said, the more music you can line dance to (theoretically, for me, I haven’t danced in public since ‘80s Night at Don Hills, IYKYK), the better. - MM
