Also — follow our very new Instagram!! We’ll be posting up a storm from our various country adventures. And now, the picks: and a whole lot of them.
The Good
“I Dodged A Mullet,” The Chattahoochies: Song name - A+. Bandname - A+. Building buzz on TikTok with the slogan “real cuntry music” - A+….I’m falling for the marketing. The song has Pistol Annies whimsy and that’s about the highest praise I can give! — NW [ I am equally obsessed with this band, as well as a long time Kree Harrison fan club card carrier. - MM]
“Fox Hunt,” Sierra Ferrell: I know folks love to point to Sierra as one of the artists who is “resurrecting old country” or whatnot, but strangely, her music has always felt so rooted in the present to me - and this new release, “Fox Hunt,” is no different. The fiddle is foreboding and ethereal at once, the percussion aggressive and in constant motion, a march through the woods and fields, always on the lookout. - MM
“Fine County Line,” Lauren Watkins: Somehow this song is a combo of nineties pop-country sensibility and Robert Palmer? Don’t ask, just listen, it all works. Smart songwriting, a raspy-twangy voice. Definitely a newcomer with a lot of promise. - MM
“Barefoot & Pregnant,” Gwen Levey and the Breakdown: Another pro-abortion country song, praise be! Now we just need like a thousand more. Because this song is lighthearted rather than as dark as it might be given its subject matter, you’ll finish the listen feeling invigorated instead of dismal. — NW
