Hello and welcome to your Friday post - as we mentioned last month, we’re starting to rotate in some different takes on our traditional song roundups. First off, it was the the debut of our curated guides, starting with Eric Church. Today, in the wake of Beyoncé’s take on “Jolene,” I thought a guide through some of the best “Jolene” covers, responses and non-covers somehow still named “Jolene” would be fitting for the moment (cue some guy on Twitter being like “did you know Dolly wrote Jolene and I Will Always Love You On the Same DAY!!!” and me rolling my eyes).
“Jolene” is one of those songs that exists as both classic, cannon and cultural switchblade - there’s nothing handier to adapt when the artist wants to make a point to link to their country heritage or country culture.
