Wholeheartedly co-sign all the above, Marrissa. Will be interesting to see how (if?) things shift this year. Holler next time you're in upstate NY, we can grab a meal at a Severance location :) (Phoenicia Diner or Eng's in Kingston)
Sierra Ferrell tops my list, too. I doubt many SNL viewers know of her, and I enjoy imagining the scene in living rooms when Sierra takes the stage wearing a quirky dress and tiara, and that old-timey voice comes out of her mouth, and over the next 2 minutes the viewers at home transition from "WTF is this?" to "Holy fuck, I gotta listen to her entire oeuvre." That was my reaction the first time I saw her on Western AF.
Also: Eric Church has never been on the show?! For shame for shame.
They should’ve had Beyonce on this year, for sure, to sing from Cowboy Carter, but any of the artists you suggested would be great to hear. They do seem to have a really provincial view of country music, unfortunately.
I was there live for Sturgill Simpson's performance! (It was my birthday, and a friend invited me to hang out in the writers' room for the episode!)
oh man so jealous! I bet it was incredible. definitely rank that performance in one of my all time favorites. - mm

Maybe Jake and Elwood should have made good with the Good Ol' Boys and invited them onto the show.
